Apple And Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese Just In Time For Grilled Cheese Month!

Apple And Caramelized Onion Grilled Cheese Just In Time For Grilled Cheese Month!

This post is sponsored by Borden® Cheese. The opinions and text are all mine.

Did you know April is grilled cheese month? I couldn’t pass up celebrating so I decided to share one of my favorite grilled cheese recipes made with Borden® American Melts. When I was in college I went through a crazy grilled cheese phase. I spent hours looking up recipes for all kinds of interesting grilled cheese add ons and trying out different combinations. Grilled cheese may be standard college student fare but I was determined to have nothing “standard” about my grilled cheese. After quite a bit of trial and error I found my absolute favorite recipe that I continue to make to this day. I thought it would be fun to share it with you in honor of grilled cheese month. If you love a combo of sweet and savory then this apple and caramelized onion grilled cheese is for you. I have a few secrets that I will let you in on and I promise this easy recipe will likely end up on your monthly meal rotation.

Here is what you will need:

Borden American Melts

½ Yellow Onion

1 Teaspoon Brown Sugar

½ Granny Smith Apple thinly sliced

Classic Hummus

Butter

1. Heat butter in a skillet and add onion and brown sugar. Cook, stirring occasionally until the onions are golden (5-6 min) and transfer to a plate.

2. Butter the outer slices of your bread and begin to build your grilled cheese. Start by spreading a thin layer of hummus on the inside slices of each piece of bread. Then add 1-2 slices of Borden Melts on top of the hummus on the bottom layer slice of bread. Top with a layer of onions and add slices of the Granny Smith apple on top. Add an additional 1-2 slices of Borden Melts on top and place the final slice of bread, hummus side down, onto your sandwich.

 3. Transfer your sandwich to the skillet, butter side down, and cook on medium-low heat. Cook each side of the sandwich for 3-4 minutes until the bread is toasted and the cheese has begun to melt. Remove from heat, cut in half and serve!

After making this sandwich for years there are a few secrets to making it the best it can be and trust me when I say you don’t want to skip them.

1. Use Borden Melts. Using the right cheese makes such a difference since it IS the key ingredient to any grilled cheese. The Borden Melts are made with real cream in every slice so they melt perfectly every time! Their cheese is brought to you by a farmer owned cooperative. It’s made with real milk that has no added hormones and it’s an excellent source of calcium. The smooth and creamy cheese pairs perfectly with the crisp apple and sweet caramelized onions and you can easily find it at your local Publix.

2. Don’t skip the brown sugar when cooking up your onions. It really makes the perfect savory caramelized onion when you add that little bit of brown sugar to the mix. They come out perfect every time and the flavor is amazing.

3. Don’t hold out on the hummus. This is what gives the grilled cheese that little extra zing. The flavor combo is totally unique and it will blow you away how well it pairs together with the cheese, onion and apple combo. I know it may not be a common ingredient in a grilled cheese but trust me when I say to give it a try.

I hope you love this delicious and fun recipe as much as my family does! It only takes a few minutes to make (and is hard to mess up) making it perfect for cooking newbies or even seasoned pros who just need an easy meal idea! Have fun making it and enjoy!

 Warmest,

 Kelly
