A few weekends ago, I had the most fun travel experience yet—I swapped lives (well, cities!) with my fellow influencer @arneradventures. She’s based in New Bern, North Carolina, while I’m up here in Connecticut. We thought, what if we switched places for the weekend to explore each other’s towns? Where We Stayed: Tryon Riverfront Inn by Tapestry
As soon as we landed, we headed to our home base for the weekend: the Tryon Inn. The location could not have been better—it’s right on the river with gorgeous views and within walking distance to shops, restaurants, and historic sites. The décor was chic with a modern vibe, and our room overlooked the water. We loved sitting with a coffee on the back patio watching the boats in the morning while chatting. Day 1: Downtown Dining + Drinks
We jumped right into the charm of downtown New Bern. It’s such a walkable, storybook kind of place—full of history, colorful storefronts, and the friendliest people.
Dinner was at Confluence, where we enjoyed delicious blue crab nachos and fish tacos. Afterward, we stopped in for some live music on the back patio of the DoubleTree. They have the cutest outdoor bar with a super relaxing vibe where you can grab a drink, watch the sunset and enjoy a live band with beautiful water views—such a fun way to ease into the weekend.
But the night didn’t stop there. We capped things off with cocktails at Baxter’s 1892. From the live music to the speak-easy vibe everything about Baxter’s was incredible. The drinks were top-notch, and the highlight? Their delicious rum cake set on fire tableside. Absolutely delicious and unforgettable.
Day 2: History, Food, and Fun
We started our morning with a guided tour of Tryon Palace and exploring the North Carolina History Center. The palace is stunning, and learning about the rich history of North Carolina made us appreciate New Bern even more. Did you know that New Bern was North Carolina’s first capital?
Lunch was at Lawson’s on the Creek. We ate outside overlooking the water, and the food was fantastic—especially the panini with tater tots (a must-order). In the afternoon, we took a walk by the river and strolled through downtown. We stopped in at the birthplace of pepsi for a quick .50 cent soda and enjoyed poping into the adorable storefronts and boutiques.
After soaking up the charm of the city we headed to dinner at Cypress Hall Kitchen + Bar. This restaurant was such a vibe—cool atmosphere, amazing cocktails, and truly one of the best meals of our lives. We loved every single thing we ordered. To finish off the night, we went axe throwing at Beary The Hatchet. It was such a blast and definitely a fun way to do something a little different on a girls’ trip.
Day 3: A Perfect Beach Day
On day three, we grabbed breakfast at Bella’s Café and then picked up beach chairs and an umbrella at AB Beach Bike and Beach Rentals.
We headed out to the beach in North Carolina’s renowned Crystal Coast, and it was pure perfection. The water was warm and inviting, the weather couldn’t have been better, and it felt so good to just relax in the sun. For lunch, we picked up fish tacos to go from Idle Hour Biergarten and ate them right on the beach. Absolute bliss.
That evening, we wrapped up the day with dinner at Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant in New Bern. Eating fresh seafood with a window view of the river while the sun set was the perfect ending to a beach day. I highly recommend ordering the unicorn fish or shrimp and grits. Both were a 10/10!
Day 4: Trolley Tours + One Last Stroll
On our last morning, we had breakfast at Baker’s Kitchen (their biscuits are legendary!). Then we hopped on the New Bern Trolley Tour, which gave us a great overview of the city’s history and hidden gems.
For lunch, we stopped at The Chelsea. The shrimp and grits were out of this world—such a comforting and satisfying final meal in town. Before heading to the airport, we squeezed in a little more time downtown and one more walk along the Riverwalk, soaking up the views and savoring those last conversations before flying home on Breeze.
Final Thoughts
This girls’ weekend was everything I hoped for and more—delicious food, gorgeous views, fun adventures, and plenty of laughter with my best friends. Swapping cities with @arneradventures made it extra special, because we got to experience New Bern through her local lens.
